King Manu is praying by a river when a tiny fish swims into his cupped hands and begs him not to throw it back. He places it in a pot instead. By the next morning it has outgrown the pot. Then the jar. Then the lake. Then the entire ocean cannot hold it. Manu understands. This is no ordinary fish.
Matsya warns Manu of a flood coming to dissolve the world, and gives him one task: build a boat, gather the seeds of every living thing, and hold on. When the waters rise and swallow the horizon, it is Matsya, now vast beyond imagining, who tows Manu’s boat to safety, keeping the Vedas and the future of creation safe until the world can be born again.
This is the first Avatar of Vishnu. The first time the Preserver stepped into the world he protects, in the smallest possible form, to carry the largest possible promise.
